They outperform other forest types, including tropical forests like the Amazon, by nearly 10 times. As these forests continue to be destroyed, more CO2 enters the atmosphere, exacerbating the pace of climate change.
Why are Mangrove Forests in Danger?
Mangrove forests are facing a critical threat with a rapid rate of decline. Over the past two decades, approximately 35% of mangrove forests, equivalent to around 44,000 square kilometers, have been lost globally. Unsustainable development, aquaculture, tourism, and timber overexploitation are among the primary causes of this alarming decline, resulting in significant ecological and socio-economic consequences for both local communities and the planet as a whole.

Mangrove restoration is regrowing and replanting mangroves in areas where they have been lost.
The approach involves training local communities, cultivating and transplanting seedlings, and recovering abandoned areas.
