Mangrove Restoration

We believe planting a mangrove tree is a simple, tangible, and effective way to help save our planet.

What are Mangrove Forests?

What is a Mangrove?

Mangroves are salt and flood-tolerant trees that thrive in challenging coastal environments as they have adapted to hypersaline waters and waterlogged soils, defying unstable conditions.. They exist in over 123 countries, covering an area of more than 130,000km2 globally. They are one of the most important types of trees on the planet.

What is Mangrove Forest?

Mangrove forests are crucial coastal ecosystems with remarkable significance. They are rich with biodiversity, provide vital resources for local communities, and play a vital role in mitigating climate change by absorbing substantial amounts of CO2.

Why Are Mangrove Forests Important?

Around the world, coastal and non-coastal communities alike, depend heavily on oceanic ecosystems, including mangrove forests. Understanding the immense ecological, economic, and medical value of mangrove forests emphasizes the urgency of protecting and conserving these remarkable ecosystems.

Biodiversity

Mangrove forests offer shelter and sustenance to diverse land and marine species, serving as nurseries for countless life forms. Additionally, these coastal ecosystems teem with biodiversity, offering potential sources for medicinal breakthroughs.

Coastal Defense

Mangroves act as guardians during storms and high tides, supporting local communities. By serving as coastal defenders, coral reefs enhance the resilience of communities and provide protection against the impacts of climate change and coastal flooding.

The Livilihoods of Small Local Communities

In addition to providing vital resources for local communities, Mangroves contribute to local economies through tourism and sustainable resource utilization.

Water Filtration

Mangroves act as nature's filtration system by effectively filtering and enhancing water quality. Their intricate root systems and dense vegetation trap sediments, pollutants, and excess nutrients, preventing them from reaching coastal waters. This filtration process helps maintain the health of marine ecosystems, improves water clarity, and protects the habitats of various marine species, ultimately contributing to the overall ecological balance and sustainability of coastal areas.

Mangrove Forests are one of our Best Assets Against Climate Change

What sets mangrove forests apart is their exceptional ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. They outperform other forest types, including tropical forests like the Amazon, by nearly 10 times. As these forests continue to be destroyed, more CO2 enters the atmosphere, exacerbating the pace of climate change.

Why are Mangrove Forests in Danger?

Mangrove forests are facing a critical threat with a rapid rate of decline. Over the past two decades, approximately 35% of mangrove forests, equivalent to around 44,000 square kilometers, have been lost globally. Unsustainable development, aquaculture, tourism, and timber overexploitation are among the primary causes of this alarming decline, resulting in significant ecological and socio-economic consequences for both local communities and the planet as a whole.

What is Mangrove Restoration?

Mangrove restoration is regrowing and replanting mangroves in areas where they have been lost. The approach involves training local communities, cultivating and transplanting seedlings, and recovering abandoned areas. Restoration restores biodiversity, fights climate change, and protects vital ecosystems for a sustainable future.

By actively growing and planting new trees on degraded forests, we can kick start recovery and give nature a chance to repair itself so that it may eventually thrive again.
